Climate Marches on the Sabbath Poses Dilemma for Some Jews

Spreading the practice of a true day of rest every week could be the most powerful market force on the planet to fight climate change.”

— Israeli solar leader Yosef Abramowitz

WASHINGTON, DC, UNITED STATES , April 28, 2017 /EINPresswire.com/ — Despite the People's Climate March being held on the Jewish Sabbath tomorrow, Israel's leading solar pioneer is calling on Jews worldwide to participate since the commandment to save lives takes priority over traditional Sabbath observance.

Appearing on i24's news program Thursday night (http://i24news.tv), Yosef Abramowitz, a religious Jewish leader and a founding father of the solar industries in Israel and East Africa, said that it is a religious imperative to march to save the planet. "Extreme droughts in sub-Sahara Africa threatens the lives of millions of people and fuels growing Jihadism," said Abramowitz. "We want to the United States to remain in the Paris Climate Agreement."

Writing in the Jerusalem Post, Abramowitz further added that "If we consciously scale back our consumption, our driving, our materialism, our work with a true day of rest, and if every faith community in the world followed suit, we could reduce by 1/7th greenhouse gas emissions – enough to bring the earth back into balance. In Israel, our greenhouse gas emissions are nearly nonexistent on Yom Kippur and there is a 30% reduction on Shabbat. Spreading the practice of a true day of rest every week could be the most powerful market force on the planet.

Abramowitz, named by CNN one of the top six Green Pioneers worldwide, will be joining from Jerusalem Hazon and other Jewish groups in the faith delegation to the climate march April 29th in Washington, DC. He is a former Israeli presidential candidate and is working on a book on climate change and faith.

The full text of of "Marching for Jewish Values" appears below:

This religious Jew is going to observe next Shabbat in Washington, DC, in an unorthodox yet deeply Jewish way – marching to save the planet.

The fact that there is some ambivalence in the Jewish community about whether to participate in the People’s Climate March on our holy day shows a fundamental lack of understanding of the seriousness of the climate threat to human life. The mitzva of pikuah nefesh – the commandment to break Shabbat to save a life – applies here, since the fate of millions, and ultimately billions, hangs in the balance.

In Israel, the sister climate march will take place on Friday, April 28, in Tel Aviv, and dozens of sister marches will happen worldwide on Shabbat that Jews everywhere should join as a religious and civic duty.

I travel the world advancing the creation of solar markets, which has now become big business in the service of protecting the majesty of God’s creation. While the cherry blossoms will bloom as usual in Washington, biblical level droughts are devastating parts of Africa, fueling jihadism. While the sun is likely to be shining on the million marchers past Capitol Hill, super-charged typhoons in the Philippines may be gathering strength from warmer waters and rising tides, which drowned 6,300 people and displaced over 2 million in 2013. While Washington, DC, may have enough water, a majority of US states are moving toward water scarcity and increased wildfires. And while the lights are on in Israel, Gaza sits in darkness, and without the power to fuel the wastewater treatment plant, desalination projects or hospitals. The sparks that lit the crimes against humanity called the Syrian civil war and the Darfur genocide were in part because of increasingly scarce water resources, heralding even greater climate-ignited crises in the future.

Israel’s energy profile is thankfully moving from dirty coal to natural gas, with some reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. But when it comes to green energy, the Jewish state’s modest goals essentially removes it from the club of enlightened Western countries. Today, only 3% of Israel’s energy comes from the sun, when it could account for 100% of the day-time usage. This will soon be the case for the Arava, from the Red Sea to the Dead Sea, so we know it is technically possible and economically worthwhile. World Jewry should demand greater accountability from Israel when it comes to its climate and energy policies, which are essentially stuck in the 20th century.

Yet the world Jewish community is no better. Our holy synagogues are fueled by dirty power instead of God’s light; our rabbis drive combustion engine cars, which should be considered a hilul hashem, a desecration of God’s name. The endowments of all the Israeli universities, Jewish federations and foundations are more invested in oil and other fossil fuels than they are in green energy, carrying a moral stain blindly in an age of potential enlightenment.

While the rapid deployment of renewables and the switch to electric cars are drivers of the green economy of the future, and part of the solution to climate change, the most effective way to stop climate change is not dependent upon the Paris Agreement, the US Congress or administration or the Israel Electric Corporation. Rather, it is the hands of each and every Jew and person of faith: a day of rest.

If we consciously scale back our consumption, our driving, our materialism, our work with a true day of rest, and if every faith community in the world followed suit, we could reduce by 1/7th greenhouse gas emissions – enough to bring the earth back into balance. In Israel, our greenhouse gas emissions are nearly nonexistent on Yom Kippur and there is a 30% reduction on Shabbat. Spreading the practice of a true day of rest every week could be the most powerful market force on the planet.

So marching as a Jew on Shabbat in climate marches around the world fulfills the mitzva of pikuah nefesh, and reminds us and the world that the solution is truly in our hands. As Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel said during the US civil rights movement, by marching for a good cause, his “feet were praying.”

Lehigh Valley IT Support Team at KDG Brings Allentown Church’s Technology Up to Date

small business IT support lehigh valley

The Lehigh Valley IT support team at KDG has helped Christ Lutheran Church in Allentown improve its wireless network.

The tech management team at KDG worked closely with a Lehigh Valley church to give its hardware, software, wireless, and other technology an overhaul.

KDG has been an important partner as we have upgraded our computers and WiFi systems.”

— Reverend William “Woody” Maxon

ALLENTOWN, PENNSYLVANIA, UNITED STATES, April 25, 2017 /EINPresswire.com/ — Christ Lutheran Church in Allentown has taken a very active role in the city’s community for decades. It’s not only a place of worship for Allentown residents, but also an outreach center that provides access to arts and education for people in the community.

Senior Pastor at Christ Lutheran Church, Reverend William “Woody” Maxon, explains that the area’s higher poverty rate means that many in the community do not have access to personal computers. As a result, students rely on the church’s computers to access the internet and study, while adults need the computers to check emails and even enroll in online education courses. Meanwhile, the community’s elderly use the church computers to register for programs like Social Security. Because it plays such an important role in the community, the church needed technology to keep leaders, volunteers, and members connected. It turned to the Lehigh Valley IT support team at KDG for help.

The team, led by Director of Operations Jim Sullivan, conducted a complete analysis of the church’s technology at both its main location on Hamilton Street and its outreach center only minutes away on nearby Turner Street.

A series of hardware, software, and network changes took place following the analysis. To start, KDG replaced a dozen old computers with new laptop and desktop devices. Now, there are new computer labs in both the church and the outreach center. Every new computer features security enhancements so that anyone using them—congregation leaders, church volunteers, community members, students, etc.—will have a safe web browsing experience. Mail servers were migrated to Office 365, which not only offers increased security, but also improved collaborative capabilities. The tech management experts also added a new NAS file server. In addition, the church’s phone key system was retired and replaced with a voice over internet protocol, or VoIP system.

However, perhaps the biggest challenge facing KDG and Christ Lutheran Church was improving the wireless network in the stone church.

“Their single wireless network was not able to reach the entire building,” explains Sullivan. “This led to an interrupted and slow connection. In such an old building, made out of stone, granite, and concrete, it’s very important to have a fast internet connection.”

KDG helped Christ Lutheran Church partner with a new internet provider for faster web speed and also upgraded them to a new wireless network. The single wireless radio was replaced by eight different wireless access points throughout the building’s three main floors and basement. The improvement was noticeable immediately.

“When the updates were made, there were no dead spots throughout the entire building,” says Sullivan. “To test this, we had someone start streaming a video in the church’s basement. They went from floor to floor and the stream was never interrupted.”

All of the changes, migrations, and installations took about two months to make. KDG also continues to provide ongoing service to the church through monthly maintenance updates, help desk support, and device management.

“KDG has been an important partner as we have upgraded our computers and WiFi systems,” says Reverend Maxon.

With the new technology and the continued support from KDG, Christ Lutheran Church can continue to offer its services to residents of Allentown both online and off. Reverend Maxon calls the church a “one-stop shop” for residents’ spiritual and computer needs. After school, students can use the computers to do their homework and study. The church’s Summer Program now has software and internet access to keep kids busy. The city’s elderly citizens can access their emails and continue to register for important programs, while adults in the area can stream online education programs. Even the church’s staff has new software programs that help make their daily tasks a little simpler and more efficient.

MERIDIAN, MISSISSIPPI, USA, April 25, 2017 /EINPresswire.com/ — An event made for impact is coming to the Love City Church of Meridian Mississippi. The event is entitled, “Ladies Night Out”. This event is centered around the many issues women face on their road to prosperity, success, and fulfillment. The guest speaker for this event is New Orleans native Robert C. Blakes Jr. Blakes is a busy camper nowadays. His credits include, pastor of New Home Ministries; one church in two states. (New Orleans La. Houston TX.) Blakes, is also Bishop of the Family of Churches Fellowship International which is a conglomerate of churches and Ministries who are advancing new day thinking to the old institution known as the church. If this is not enough, he is the author of two books, “Father Daughter Talk” and the Newly released “Queenolgy”. They are both hot commodities across the country. I asked Bishop Blakes about his foundational thinking for these two life changing books. He stated, his initial thoughts were to speak to the clear issues of low-self esteem and the lack of self identity in the women of his church. “The overt sexuality and gullible nature towards ungodly men concerned me and I wanted to speak to them as a father would to his daughters”, he explained. As it turned out that message has resonated with women across the nation and into other nations. The book, “THE FATHER DAUGHTER TALK” has been shipped to four continents. “QUEENOLOGY” he says, was the introduction of a new generation of women to who they were purposed to be by their creator. Every woman was born a queen. But, most have not been informed yet. “Queenology” is my effort to awaken an unconscious generation of queens, he explained. Blakes will be the guest speaker at the Love City Church in Meridian on May 5-6, 2017, Friday at 7p.m. and Saturday, at 10:00 a.m. Love City’s pastor Betty Alford says, she knows this will be a time of refreshment and rejuvenation for women to claim and reclaim their purpose, destiny and self image. The men of the church will be on duty these two days to serve all the queens that will attend.

Wynwood Police Shut Down Guerilla Theater Stage Play NO PICTURES PLEASE!

The controversial satire and guerilla theater stage play NO PICTURES PLEASE was shut down as the actors & crew attempted to erect a makeshift stage.

WYNWOOD, FLORIDA, USA, April 19, 2017 /EINPresswire.com/ — After raising funds through an Indiegogo campaign, and finding four actors willing to take the risk, Doug Shear attempted to produce his controversial guerilla stage play No Pictures Please. He chose the popular tourist destination of Wynwood, Florida for the event, which took place on April 15, 2017.

As the team was in the process of erecting their makeshift stage, a Wynwood Police Officer shut down the production.

The play, which is ten minutes long, is a comedy that satirizes both Islam and the limits of free speech in America. As the Play progresses, a fake terrorist interrupts and threatens to trigger his bomb vest in retaliation. However, the Director informs him that since this is the first time the Play has ever been performed in front of an audience, and therefore the Terrorist should let them finish it. The terrorist agrees. If he finds the Play offensive, then and only then will he set off the bomb. The actors are forced to continue the Play under the threat of death.

According to Doug Sheer, the creator of No Pictures Please, “At no point in the play will the audience believe they are threatened. The actor playing the terrorist is wearing a bomb vest t-shirt and a pink, toy clock.”

That was not the original intent, however, as the play was initially planned as an interactive experience in which the audience, having already been forced to walk through a metal detector to enter the theater, would believe the terrorist was real. That plan was eventually abandoned.

“I realized that what I wanted to do didn’t just bump up against the limits of free speech, it crossed the line. I had even researched ways to suppress people’s cellphone signals, to keep them from calling the police during the five or ten minutes they might actually believe they were under the threat of an explosion. But apparently that would be illegal.”

Unable to find a willing venue, Doug tried to rent space at the Wynwood Farmer’s Market and Wynwood Alley. They turned him down, based on the subject matter of the Play. That is when Doug decided his only choice was to produce the play using Guerilla Theater. Guerilla Theater is the dramatization of political and social issues, typically performed outdoors, as a means of protest or propaganda.

On Saturday, April 15, Doug, the four actors and the crew attempted to erect the makeshift stage in surprisingly strong winds. The stage consisted of a metal frame and tarps, meant to simulate a tent. The front consisted of Arabian style curtains and decorations. The wind made the task nearly impossible and everyone was concerned it might blow away and hurt people. The actors consisted of Diana Frederick as Malala, Isabel as Aisha, Tony Albanes as Muhammed, and Omar the Red as the Terrorist. The crew prefers to remain anonymous.

As this was occurring, a Wynwood Police officer drove up and demanded a film permit. He had received complaints. An argument ensued between Doug and the Police Officer regarding the need for a permit, and what constitutes blocking the streets.

Prior to attempting to perform No Pictures Please, Doug had contacted the City of Miami Neighborhood Enhancement Team, which is responsible for permits in Wynwood. After a discussion with an employee of that agency, Mr. Shear was led to believe that a permit would not be required. He presented the Police Officer with a laminated note that included the name of the individual with whom he spoke, and indicated that a permit was not required because the event would only take about twenty minutes, was a one-time event, and would not block the streets. He also stated that he did not require a film permit because he was producing a stage play, not a film.

The Officer pointed across the street to the farmer’s market and indicated that people had paid money to rent space, and that the No Pictures Please group wanted to do the same thing for free. Doug pointed out that the theater group was not charging anything and wasn’t even asking for donation, and that he had contacted the Farmer’s Market and offered to rent a space but was refused.

The Police Officer insisted that the structure be taken down and that there was nowhere in Wynwood No Pictures Please could be performed without a permit.

The stage was then taken down and loaded into a car and the production was halted.

Doug was disappointed, but not surprised. “Us getting shut down is just another example of how folk are so terrified of the terrorists that they are willing to give up their first amendment right to free speech,” he stated. “My best friends refused to support my project or be associated with it in any way. My family even staged an intervention.”

Doug believes the concern is exaggerated. He points to numerous documentaries, films and individuals that are far more offensive to Islam. He believes his satire, while certainly offensive to some Muslims, just doesn’t rise to the top of the list.

“My play isn’t offensive enough to warrant the cost of bomb vest, let alone a small bullet,” he said. “So why all the fuss”

Doug stated that he had reached out to Muslims regarding his project.

“Ironically, “he said, “The only people who don’t seem to give a rat’s ass about my play are the Muslims. When I contacted several Islamic organizations and individuals and told them about No Pictures Please, and requested a Muslim actor willing to play the role of the Prophet Muhammad, the worst response I got was “This is not for us, thanks anyway.”

Eschatology is the study of the end times and events that are yet to take place in the world, and forms an important part of Christian theological studies. But there is only one seminary that actually offers graduate and doctoral programs in this field. As a non-regional seminary, LWTS is a non-regionally accredited school that also offers the complete range of seminary degree programs available elsewhere.
The Masters and Doctoral programs in eschatology are both comprehensive and rigorous, and students which have studied this specialized field of theology, can finally funnel their energy into a credible and viable degree program.
Since the Christian Church shares several different views concerning the final events surrounding end time prophecy, students that enroll at LWTS for the Eschatology Degree Program will learn every angle of each position and thereby receive a well balanced and overall picture of eschatological teaching, regardless of their personal view.
The Luder Wycliffe Theological Seminary offers one of the most in-depth and targeted learning systems available by any online religious institution. Its studies comprise both a mixture of online and physical textbooks as well as completely offline and paper based course work for those who prefer the traditional methods. LWTS also offers one-on-one mentorship with their studies.
Luder Wycliffe is a Baptist based school, but is open to all evangelical persuasions, as is the case with such a school like Liberty University.
“Having a degree in eschatology has been long overdue, and I’m surprised no other school has ever thought of it. The appetite and need for this subject is there, so therefore must be the demand." said Jack Nelson, D. Min., President and Founder.

NEW YORK, NY, ., April 17, 2017 /EINPresswire.com/ — WAG Magazine showcased skincare entrepreneur Elizabeth Sanders of HorseOPeace.com goat milk soaps, in a profile about how she combines making natural soaps that keep skin soft and healthy with religious values that permeate her business and family life.

“Sanders is the entrepreneur behind Horse O Peace raw goat-milk soaps and Healthy Pets goat-milk shampoo soaps for dogs and cats. The Winston-Salem, North Carolina, resident has been featured in The New York Times, on ABC’s Tampa, Florida, affiliate and on radio stations throughout the Midwest. But she’s no beauty diva,” the magazine said.

WAG Editor Georgette Gouveia in her “Tis a Gift to Be Simple” article, wrote “Sanders grew up in Minnesota, where she was born, and northern Wisconsin, where she followed the Dunkard Brethren, a community of Plain People similar to the Mennonites and Amish. On the family farm she wore a kerchief and long dress and lived a simple life as she trained horses as hardy workers and gentle companions for children. Sanders even served as a handler in equine therapy for disabled youngsters.”

Voted New York’s best monthly magazine, WAG Magazine serves the New York metro, Connecticut and New Jersey markets. Elizabeth was profiled in the April issue, along with Hilaria Baldwin, the Extra TV correspondent married to actor Alec Baldwin, about her “The Living Clearly Method” book; famed musician Paul Shaffer since his David Letterman Show gig, and jeweler Tiffany debuting the elegant and pricey “Art of the Wild” jewelry collection, and a range of other articles.

WAG said, “Sanders didn’t remain a follower of the Brethren. While the hard work and simplicity appealed to her, she says she found little room for herself as an independent, entrepreneurial woman.”

Sanders’ soap making began as a hobby and grew to a business. WAG stated, “The rigors of wintry farm life and horse training began to take a toll on her hands. That’s when she began making goat-milk soap to heal the cracks and chapped look. (The secret was using 100 percent goat-milk in the formula — no water, which tends to dry the skin.) Thus Horse O Peace was born, playing in its name on the farmer’s expression “a horse a piece up the road” to describe the ride to town.”

WAG added, “You can take Sanders out of the Plain People but you can’t take plain generosity out of Sanders.” Elizabeth added, “Our parents instilled in us that if we can help others, we do it.” Today, she helps at church, bakes cookies for a men’s shelter, adds free soap to military addressed orders and maintains family-friendly prices for her soaps that top fashion and beauty blog BeautyStat.com called an “excellent line of products offered at a shockingly affordable price.”

With her IT executive husband Nick, who designed and runs the HorseOPeace.com website and helps in operations, the couple homeschools their 4 sons, ages 1 to 5, in the tradition they both experienced.

HorseOPeace.com, based in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, has satisfied around the USA and world for its natural scented and unscented goat milk soaps, Shea butter cream and lip balms. Based in Winston-Salem, NC, its soaps are available at www.HorseOPeace.com, Amazon.com, Facebook.com/HorseOPeace and elsewhere. Horse ‘O Peace Ranch is active on social media at Twitter.com/HorseOPeace and Instagram.com/HorseOPeaceRanch. Media contact BD@DobsonPR.com.
