Two Connected to Louvre Heist Get Arrested

(MENAFN) French law enforcement apprehended two individuals in connection with last week’s daring robbery at the Louvre Museum, during which eight of France's crown jewels, valued at approximately €88 million ($102M), were stolen, according to local media reports on Sunday.

As per a broadcaster, one of the suspects was taken into custody late Saturday at the Roissy-Charles-de-Gaulle Airport while attempting to board a flight to Algeria.

The arrest was conducted by both border police and the anti-banditry brigade.

Another suspect was also detained in relation to the burglary, which is believed to have been carried out by a four-person group.

The thieves reportedly broke a window in the Apollon Gallery before fleeing with the precious jewels.

Authorities are continuing to search for two additional suspects and the stolen items.

The jewelry collection that was taken included a necklace and an earring from the Marie-Louise collection, a necklace, earrings, and tiara from the Marie-Amelie and Hortense collections, as well as two brooches, a bodice bow, and a tiara from the Empress Eugenie collection.

Investigators later discovered Eugenie’s crown, which had been abandoned by the thieves near the museum. A Louvre security guard noted that the discovery served as clear evidence that the robbers’ "plan was thwarted."
