Explosion Injures Five at New York Church
The explosion struck the Abundant Life Fellowship Church in Boonville, Oneida County, after a gas odor had been detected inside the building, police said in a news release. The timing proved devastating: a firefighter responding to the scene was still within the structure when the explosion detonated, leaving both that responder and a civilian in critical condition.
All five injured individuals were transported to a local hospital for treatment, authorities said.
New York State Police have launched an investigation into the blast's origin, though early findings offer some reassurance — as of Tuesday afternoon, investigators said there are no indications that criminal activity played any role in the incident.
The cause of the explosion remains under active investigation.
