UN Expresses Concern Over Reported Damage to Religious Statue in Lebanon

(MENAFN) The United Nations human rights office has expressed concern over an incident involving damage to a statue of Jesus in southern Lebanon, as stated by reports citing a UN spokesperson.

According to reports, the office said it is aware of the incident involving a member of the Israeli military and noted that Israel’s own announcement on the matter is being addressed.

UN spokesperson Thameen Al-Kheetan said the incident raises serious concerns under international humanitarian and human rights law, which require the protection of religious symbols and cultural property.

He added that such actions may also be viewed as an interference with freedom of religion, as stated by reports.

The spokesperson further emphasized Israel’s responsibility to conduct a prompt, thorough, and impartial investigation and ensure accountability for those involved.

A widely circulated image reportedly shows an Israeli soldier striking a statue of Jesus with a sledgehammer in southern Lebanon, which has sparked international criticism and condemnation from religious and political figures, according to reports.
