S. Korean Lawmaker Receives Two Year Prison Sentence

(MENAFN) A South Korean court handed a two-year prison sentence Tuesday to a prominent opposition legislator convicted of illegally pocketing political funds from the country's Unification Church — a ruling that deepens a widening corruption scandal ensnaring figures from the former administration.

The Seoul High Court found Rep. Kweon Seong-dong of the main opposition People Power Party (PPP) guilty of accepting 100 million won ($68,000) from a church official who sought political favors from the government of former President Yoon Suk Yeol, media reported.

The verdict lands as the Unification Church faces mounting legal pressure on multiple fronts. South Korea Unification Church leader Han Hak-ja is separately standing trial on bribery charges linked to former first lady Kim Keon Hee, who remains in detention after a court rejected her bid for extended temporary release in February, citing health concerns.

Kim faces further legal jeopardy as the Seoul High Court prepares to rule on corruption charges against her — a case that follows a lower court's decision in January to sentence her to one year and eight months behind bars.

Together, the rulings signal an intensifying judicial reckoning with corruption allegations that stretch across the inner circles of South Korea's former ruling establishment.
