Ultra-Orthodox Protests Escalate in Israel Over Military Draft Arrests

(MENAFN) According to reports, tensions in Israel intensified after a group of ultra-Orthodox demonstrators stormed the home of the country’s military police chief in the southern city of Ashkelon. The incident is linked to ongoing disputes over the arrest of individuals accused of avoiding mandatory military service.

Israeli Army Radio reported that members of the Haredi community gathered outside the residence of Yuval Yamin, with a portion of the group breaking into the property’s yard during the protest. Authorities said the demonstration involved around 200 people.

Security sources indicated that some protesters managed to climb over the fence and enter the premises. At the time of the incident, the official was not at home, but his family members were present inside the residence.

Despite prior awareness of the planned protest, police were reportedly unable to prevent the breach of the property.

Israeli media described the event as a significant escalation in tensions between ultra-Orthodox groups and state authorities, particularly over enforcement of military conscription rules.

Political leaders condemned the incident. The prime minister called for firm measures against those involved, while the defense minister also denounced the action, stressing that the protest took place while family members were inside the home.

In related demonstrations, additional protests were reported in West Jerusalem, where participants attempted to block roads and clashed with police. Other gatherings disrupted traffic on major highways near central Israel, with demonstrators voicing strong opposition to military enlistment and displaying slogans rejecting compulsory service.
