Virginia Church Tent Collapse Leaves One Dead, Dozen Injured in Storm

(MENAFN) A church anniversary celebration in Virginia turned tragic after strong winds caused a large tent to collapse, resulting in one death and injuries to 22 people, according to reports released Friday.

The incident took place at East Lake Community Church in Moneta during an outdoor gathering commemorating the church’s 20th anniversary.

Local authorities said one person died at the scene. Eleven injured individuals were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment, while another 11 received medical care at the location for less serious injuries.

Officials designated the incident as a mass casualty event due to the number of people affected.

Church Pastor Troy Keaton said worshippers had been assembled beneath the tent when weather conditions rapidly deteriorated.

“Our church family suffered a great tragedy tonight after an outdoor tent collapsed during a celebration service for our 20th anniversary,” Keaton said, according to reports.

“Just as I had walked to the stage to release people to their cars, a burst of wind picked up the tent,” he added.

Keaton also confirmed that “one of our dear brothers suffered a fatal injury.”

Emergency responders and local authorities continued assisting those affected as the community grappled with the aftermath of the accident.
