Rare Coins, Gold Jewelry Among Items in Nebraska's Unclaimed Property Auction

LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) - The Nebraska State Treasurer’s Office is holding an online auction Oct. 6-13 of abandoned safe deposit box contents turned over to the state.

The auction will start at 8 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 6 and will be held on eBay. Bids will be accepted for seven days, with the auction ending just before 8 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 13.

Some of the items being auctioned include a white gold diamond ring, a 14-karat gold purse, a 1961 Roger Maris baseball card, century-old silver dollars, Depression-era currency and more.

Under Nebraska law, the State Treasurer’s Office holds unclaimed property, including safe deposit box contents, that has been abandoned or whose owners have since passed away.

The contents of the auction have been held by the Treasurer’s Office for more than a decade, after many attempts to locate the original owners or their families.

Proceeds from each sale will be recorded in the original owner’s name and will be held until claimed by the rightful owners or their family.

One in five Nebraskans has unclaimed property, with money waiting to be claimed in all 93 Nebraska counties.
